Here in the District — as in many places — some residents struggle with high energy bills each month. But through the DC Solar For All program, members of our community are beginning to see savings through solar energy.
In “Solar Can Be Free,” the second episode of the DC Solar Stories Documentary Series, the DC Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) discusses how equitable solar is being made available to District residents.
This episode discusses energy needs through the story of a District resident whose energy bills averaged $450 a month before they were drastically reduced through solar energy.
“We can use this solar energy for all the residents who could use some help, so they can afford to live in the District of Columbia,” said DC DOEE Director Tommy Wells in the video.
In DC, solar savings have been made available to residents through both rooftop and community solar options under DC Solar For All. Thanks to DC Solar For All, solar savings are accessible and equitable to residents in traditionally underserved communities in the District.
The first two episodes of this series premiered in September 2019, at an exclusive screening featuring panel conversations moderated by DC DOEE Director Tommy Wells. The documentary was also featured in the 2020 DC Environmental Film Festival, which reached viewers across the country due to the festival’s move to an online event this year.
DC Solar For All is a program run by DOEE and was established by a pioneering law championed by Mayor Muriel Bowser and passed by the DC City Council in July 2016.
