Driving Transformative Change through Labs and Data Science

Groundswell

This month, we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on our Labs program, which embodies our commitment to building community power through transformative innovation and research for equitable clean energy futures.

Our Labs program is at the heart of our mission to empower communities with clean energy solutions. The labs and data science projects serve to amplify the needs of the community through people-centered research initiatives. Our research publications drive equitable market transformation by providing replicable solutions with financing structures and best practices.

We are thrilled to announce that Our Vice President of Labs and Data Science, Dr. Elvis Moleka had his research report, “Exploring New Deployment Tools for Accelerating Equitable Solar Access to Low-and Moderate-Income Households” published by Springer Nature. This publication is a testament to the power of data science and underscores our role as thought leaders in the industry.

“Deployment tools like the LIFT Toolkit are important for solar developers to identify optimal financing strategies for expanding solar access and to share best practices for delivering equitable clean energy projects for LMI communities – to address root causes such as high energy burdens for disadvantaged communities,” Dr. Moleka said.

Earlier this week, Moleka joined Ariel Drehobl (Management and Program Analyst, DOE/NCSP) and Nicole Sonderegger (Director of Energy Programs, Groundswell) for a conversation about how those findings are being used to create a “roadmap” to energy equity with community solar. During our Energy Futures webinar, these experts outlined some of the “roadblocks” to equitable community solar development and shared how developers can get in the “fast lane” with newly available resources and proven steps to success. Check out the webinar here.

Within the data in the research report, there is a story of widespread energy burden. The research also identifies the pathway forward through community-centered clean energy initiatives. With the Inflation Reduction Act, there are more opportunities than ever for community-owned clean energy futures. Labs and data science shape our project development, ensuring successful and replicable solar projects that benefit low to moderate-income communities across the country.
